Shingles is part of the herpes zoster family and is an acute viral infection of the central nervous system where small blisters break out over the line of nerve tissue, generally in the rib cage area or sometimes other parts of the body.

An attack is often related to high stress levels. Although the virus lives in the nerve tissue for a lifetime, many sufferers rarely have an attack, but if attacks are frequent, there are three areas which need to be addressed: stress levels, strengthening the immune system, and eating a healthy diet with low alcohol intake. If attacks are very severe, doctors can prescribe medication. You may also consider the use of preventative medicine during and after the attack. Many older people can have shingles after major surgery or when run-down, especially if their immune system is stressed. The pain can be excruciating and painkillers can be taken if needed.

Supplements

The following supplements can be taken both during an attack and as a preventative measure.

St John's wort (hypericum): take one tablet, three times a day. This is an anti-viral herb that assists in building up the immune system when you are run-down.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids: take 1000 mg of each, three times a day.

For the elderly, I suggest a combination tablet of echinacea and St John's wort, one a day, to keep your immune system in good health.

Zinc is an important mineral for boosting immunity. Your naturopath can do a test to check your levels.

Many of my patients have used an infusion of a combination of five Japanese mushrooms (hakkumokuji, tochukaso, reiishi, shiitake and chorei) instead of the other herbs suggested above. Take 20 drops, three times a day. Even though they are expensive, this combination is brilliant as an anti-viral and can be used once a day long term as a preventative.

Red eyes

Red eyes are often caused by an allergic reaction to spring pollens and also to histamines contained in red wine, in particular. It's a good idea to observe what time of the year you suffer this problem and after which foods or drinks. Record this information. Your naturopath can then choose the appropriate vitamins and herbs to give you.

Treatment & Prevention Program

If you have spring allergies, then take at least 1000 mg each of vitamin C and bioflavonoids, twice a day. This will help considerably. Bioflavonoids such as rutin and hesperin strengthen fine broken capillaries in the whites of the eyes.

Drink a fresh orange juice daily and eat fresh pineapple each day during the spring season.

Take euphrasia tablets three times a day if sneezing is associated with redness of the eyes.
